Labyrinth’s have grown in popularity across Canada in recent years. This stand-out Labyrinth installed by Square One at the new c̓əsqənelə Elementary School in Maple Ridge is our most recent elementary school asphalt labyrinth installation that we created using StreetBond.
Ancient in origin, but regaining prominence in modern times, labyrinths have long been places of reflection and contemplation. With the earliest known versions created about 4,000 years ago, labyrinths have an ancient and interesting history.
From the Classical labyrinth that held the mythical Minotaur, to Roman-era carvings and mosaics too small to enter, to the most-walked labyrinth in the world at the Chartres Cathedral in France, history presents many fascinating examples of labyrinths.
Experts say the number of contemporary labyrinths is also on the rise, perhaps in recognition of our society’s need for reflection.
