RED MMAX (MMA)

Durable Transit Lanes & Safer Crossings

For decades, painted lanes and crosswalks have been treated as “good enough.” In reality, they fade within months, crack under heavy traffic, and deteriorate quickly in Canadian winters—forcing municipalities into endless cycles of costly repainting and disruption.

Forward-thinking cities are breaking that cycle by adopting MMAX™ MMA coatings and TrafficPatternsXD™ thermoplastic. Engineered for transit lanes, intersections, and pedestrian crossings, these high-performance surface solutions deliver the durability, safety, and visibility that modern streets demand—while slashing long-term maintenance costs and supporting Complete Streets objectives.

Two standout examples showcase this transformation:

Building Resilience Into Transit Corridors

The City of London set out to create a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor that would be safe, durable, and efficient for all road users. Painted lanes and crossings were not an option — they fade quickly under freeze–thaw cycles, de-icing chemicals, and heavy bus traffic, leading to constant maintenance and safety concerns.

How MMAX™ & TrafficPatternsXD™ Made It Possible

  • MMAX™ bus lanes delivered long-lasting color, UV stability, and skid resistance.

  • TrafficPatternsXD™ crossings created slip-resistant pedestrian zones at intersections.

  • Dual-surface system reinforced safety across multimodal conflict points.

Installation Process

The dual treatments were installed with minimal disruption. MMAX™ cured rapidly, allowing lanes to reopen quickly, while TrafficPatternsXD™ panels were heat-applied to permanently bond into the asphalt.

Community Impact

The East London Link now provides a safer, more legible corridor for buses, cyclists, and pedestrians. With fewer repainting cycles, the city has reduced maintenance costs while advancing its Complete Streets objectives.

Toronto: TTC Bus Corridors

Community Impact

The TTC now benefits from safer, more visible bus lanes that have reduced repainting interventions for over five years. The result is lower lifecycle costs, fewer service interruptions, and improved safety performance for operators and riders alike.

Strengthening Canada’s Busiest Transit Network

Toronto’s TTC bus-priority corridors face some of the highest traffic volumes and turning movements in Canada. Traditional painted lanes required constant repainting, causing costly service disruptions and reduced visibility during critical operating conditions.

Installation Process

Crews applied MMAX™ during off-peak hours, allowing corridors to reopen quickly. The MMA coating bonded securely to the asphalt, ensuring long-term durability.

How MMAX™ Made It Possible

  • MMA-based coating provided excellent UV stability, abrasion resistance, and skid resistance.

  • Rapid curing allowed for overnight application with minimal transit disruption.

  • High color retention maintained visibility through snow, rain, and low light.
